Elisabeth Toubro

Elisabeth Toubro (b. 1956) made her breakthrough in the 1980s along with a group of fellow sculptors from professor Hein Heinsen's department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Known today as the "cool sculptors”, the group’s work is characterized by highly processed surfaces and quite frequently display a certain degree of inaccessibility. Toubro's sculptures are executed with a combination of natural and new, synthetic materials that allude to naratives. These narratives emerge from the symbolic forms the artist finds in her surroundings. Toubro works with the idea of sculpture as essentially surface and her work discusses the core aspects and fundamentals associated with traditional sculpture. This is seen primarily in her choice of transparent materials and her straightforward way of riveting together the planes of the materials. Toubro's sculptures have a strong poetic element with their many contra and juxtaposition.
